Resident Evil Movie: Zach Cregger Plans Sequels [Confirmed]

Resident Evil director Zach Cregger has officially confirmed he is outlining multi-film sequels for his upcoming cinematic adaptation, pivoting away from established video game protagonists to follow Austin Abrams as a stranded medical courier attempting to survive infected Raccoon City. According to verified reports from Polygon, Cregger—celebrated for directing modern horror landmark Barbarian and the anticipated thriller Weapons—is treating Capcom’s legendary survival-horror IP not as a linear hero narrative, but as an experiential atmospheric trial. Instead of following franchise icons Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine, or Leon S. Kennedy, this cinematic reboot places an everyday civilian into an apocalyptic outbreak. The creative direction prioritizes psychological dread, limited ammunition, and inescapable body-horror anomalies over high-octane Hollywood gunplay. This gritty shift mimics the tonal renaissance seen across the [Best Single-Player RPGs Overlooked in 2026 [Full Guide]](/news/best-underrated-single-player-rpgs-ranked), validating Capcom's modern gaming design ethos. Cregger highlighted that building a foundational survival story opens immense narrative space for sequential chapters exploring expanded quarantine zones across the broader biohazard universe.
