Sony Ending PS5 Discs By 2028 Makes Sense [Confirmed]

According to verified reports from GameSpot News published in early 2026, former PlayStation executive Ken Kutaragi publicly defended Sony's controversial corporate decision to completely end support for physical PS5 game discs by 2028 as an inevitable economic transition. Speaking with VGC, the visionary often called the "Father of PlayStation" acknowledged that while millions of gamers still buy physical copies and regional sales often exceed fifty percent, consumer habits are firmly pivoting toward networked digital libraries. Kutaragi drew direct parallels to smartphones, noting that mobile users embrace cloud permanence without demanding physical cartridges. Similar to how industry ecosystem disruptions affect other platforms, such as the recent [Big Walk Xbox Release Blocked By BDS Boycott [Confirmed]](/news/big-walk-xbox-bds-boycott), hardware shifts are transforming gaming. Critics argue this move destroys consumer ownership rights, removes used-game liquidity, and penalizes collectors in regions with unstable broadband infrastructure. However, Sony’s internal telemetry indicates rising operational costs for physical manufacturing, distribution logistics, and retail margin splits make disc-based media economically unsustainable long-term. As the industry races toward an all-digital future, players must adapt to shifting ecosystem paradigms and platform-locked digital asset protections.
