League Classic Shutdown: Riot Sets RGM Shift [Confirmed]

Riot Games has officially confirmed that League Classic will permanently shut down on January 6, 2027, concluding its experimental standalone release after player engagement sharply declined, with plans to repurpose legacy assets into a recurring rotating game mode. According to verified reports from Insider Gaming, the nostalgic initiative struggled to retain concurrent users following its initial surge, as players quickly grew fatigued with outdated early-season champion balance, missing quality-of-life systems, and prolonged queue times. While community anticipation initially rivaled massive live-service announcements like the [Insider Gaming Showcase 2027: Stream Date Set [Confirmed]](/news/insider-gaming-showcase-2027-confirmed), developer analytics demonstrated that nostalgia alone could not sustain a dedicated multi-queue ecosystem over extended seasonal cycles. Riot representatives acknowledged that maintaining two divergent engine branches created unsustainable technical overhead, pulling critical engineering resources away from standard Summoner's Rift and high-tier ranked matchmaking. Moving forward, League Classic will reappear exclusively as a limited-time Rotating Game Mode (RGM) during key anniversary milestones and seasonal events. This strategic shift allows developers to preserve the historical preservation value of legacy builds without fracturing the active matchmaking pool across disparate clients. Players have until early January to conclude remaining progression track quests before server consolidation takes full effect.
