S&Box Disaster: Garry Newman Admits Project Failure [Confirmed]

According to verified reports from Kotaku published in October 2026, Garry’s Mod creator Garry Newman has candidly admitted he is deeply ashamed and embarrassed by the catastrophic player retention numbers plaguing his latest sandbox project, s&box. While his legendary 20-year-old predecessor, Garry’s Mod, continues to pull a staggering thirty thousand concurrent players daily, s&box barely scrapes five hundred active users despite estimates ranging between half a million and one million total sales. Writing on official blogs and reacting to coverage from IXBT Games following a disastrous Steam free weekend, Newman pulled no punches regarding the botched rollout. 'The launch was shit, the free weekend was shit,' Newman bluntly confessed, attributing the failure to burnt bridges and an unready product ecosystem. Facepunch Studios now faces an intense period of introspection, with Newman completely rethinking the core identity and architectural direction of s&box to salvage the platform. Industry analysts note that developer transparency of this magnitude is exceedingly rare, highlighting the steep challenges modern sandbox environments face when trying to recapture lightning in a bottle twice.
