LoL Classic Mode Shutting Down in January 2027 [Confirmed]

According to verified reports from Rock Paper Shotgun, Riot Games has confirmed that League of Legends Classic will officially close its permanent servers in January 2027 after developers determined that player retention for the nostalgic throwback mode was insufficient to justify sustained infrastructure upkeep. The standalone retro experience originally debuted in July to celebrate the early eras of Riot's flagship MOBA, offering early-season champion kits, legacy item builds, and vintage map geometry. However, internal telemetry revealed that after an initial surge of veteran interest, engagement plummeted sharply compared to persistent retro titles like World of Warcraft Classic. Riot developers clarified that while permanent queue support ends next January, the codebase will be archived, leaving the door open for rotational limited-time event revivals during future anniversaries. Modern competitive systems require undivided engineering bandwidth, especially as the studio coordinates cross-platform balance shifts across its broader portfolio. Much like recent studio shifts seen in the [Red Rooster RPG: Disco Elysium Devs Reveal New Title [Confirmed]](/news/red-rooster-disco-elysium-splinter-rpg) announcement, development resources across the PC sector continue to prioritize sustainable long-term ecosystems over fleeting heritage novelty.
