Xbox Cloud Gaming: Paid Hourly Playtime Tests [Confirmed]

According to verified reports from Insider Gaming, Microsoft has begun testing paid cloud playtime packs starting at $3.99 for Xbox Insiders, enabling players to stream their purchased console games through Xbox Cloud Gaming without holding an active Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. The pilot program introduces standalone hourly packages, giving players flexible access to their existing digital ownership libraries across supported web browsers, smart TVs, and mobile hardware. Previously locked behind the recurring $19.99 monthly Game Pass Ultimate tier, this experimental monetization structure lets non-subscribers purchase dedicated cloud streaming time blocks on demand. Insider Gaming confirmed that the testing phase evaluates stream queue performance, bitrate stability, and overall server loads ahead of a planned November rollout across global testing rings. This structural shift follows major industry consolidations, contrasting moves like [EA Cancels Mass Effect & Closes BioWare [Confirmed 2026]](/news/ea-cancels-mass-effect-bioware-closure) by expanding direct software engagement rather than cutting legacy infrastructure. Eligible testers can launch supported titles they already own digitally, provided the game features cloud compatibility. Microsoft's pricing tiers start at $3.99 for entry-level sessions, offering an alternative for casual gamers and competitive players traveling without dedicated console setups.
