The Story
The Street Fighter movie intentionally embraces a gonzo, over‑the‑top style rather than gritty realism because director Kitao Sakurai, backed by producer Cale Boyter, wanted to capture the franchise’s chaotic energy and appeal to both fans and broader audiences. According to verified reports from GameSpot News, Sakurai explained that the “gonzo energy” was inspired by his work on The Eric Andre Show, where every minute must be interesting even if absurd. He emphasized that the film’s silliness and absurdity serve to highlight the iconic characters’ larger‑than‑life personalities, rather than grounding them in realism. The Hollywood Reporter interview also noted that Legendary’s Cale Boyter championed this vision to differentiate the adaptation from previous video‑game movies. This creative direction aims to attract a younger, meme‑savvy demographic while preserving core fan service.
