The Simpsons Apu Returns With New Voice Actor [Confirmed]

The Simpsons officially reintroduced Kwik-E-Mart owner Apu Nahasapeemapetilon in the Season 38 episode 'The Revengening' on October 18, 2026, marking the beloved character's first speaking appearance in years following actor Hank Azaria stepping down over racial stereotype concerns. According to verified reports from Polygon, veteran voice actor Sunil Malhotra took the mantle to deliver an authentic, updated vocal performance for Apu, bringing resolution to one of television's longest-running character controversies. Hank Azaria initially stepped away from voicing the Springfield merchant in January 2020 after public debate spotlighted problematic caricatures in long-running broadcast animation. Following Azaria's departure, the producers of the animated juggernaut chose to keep Apu and his family in non-speaking background scenes rather than retire the franchise cornerstone entirely. Malhotra's debut in 'The Revengening' integrates Apu seamlessly back into Springfield's core storyline, demonstrating how legacy entertainment brands modernize classic characters without erasing established community lore. This thoughtful reinvention mirrors broader industry transformations seen across legacy media and interactive properties, such as when the [Modern Warfare 4 Tribute Honors Vince Zampella [Confirmed]](/news/modern-warfare-4-vince-zampella-tribute) celebrated visionary creators adapting veteran intellectual properties for modern audiences. With Fox and Disney fully supporting the vocal recast, the move opens fresh creative pathways for Apu in upcoming episodes and cross-media video game adaptations.
