PS5 Physical Discs: Ken Kutaragi Defends Shift [Confirmed]

PlayStation pioneer Ken Kutaragi officially defended Sony's strategic elimination of physical disc drives from contemporary PS5 console revisions, dismissing widespread consumer ownership backlash as an economically unreasonable mentality issue driven by outdated consumer attachment to optical media rather than modern networked reality. According to verified reports from IGN Articles, the former Sony Interactive Entertainment chief argued that modern broadband infrastructure makes physical media obsolete, comparing modern consoles directly to smartphones where users never expect optical discs. Kutaragi noted that while discs historically served as a tangible metaphor for software ownership during the PS2 and PS3 eras, persistent network connectivity renders physical distribution economically unviable for platform holders. The debate mirrors wider industry shifts, including Microsoft exploring similar ecosystem transformations seen in the [Xbox Disc-to-Digital Games List: All Titles [Confirmed]](/news/xbox-disc-to-digital-games-list). While collectors argue that disc drives safeguard software preservation and protect secondary used-game markets, Kutaragi insisted that consumer resistance stems purely from psychological habits rather than practical technological limits. As Sony standardizes digital-first hardware with optional modular drives, the industry is witnessing the decisive conclusion of retail disc dominance, permanently realigning how players purchase, store, and access console titles.
