Jeff Kaplan Overwatch Departure: Former Director Reveals 5-Year Break [Confirmed]

Former Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan revealed he has neither played nor searched for the hit hero shooter in the five years since his departure from Blizzard Entertainment. According to verified reports from VGC, Kaplan discussed his post-Blizzard career during a recent retrospective, emphasizing that he maintains a completely healthy separation from the live-service title he spearheaded for nearly two decades. Kaplan officially left Blizzard in April 2021 amid development on Overwatch 2, leaving Aaron Keller to take over directorial duties for the franchise. During his tenure, Kaplan became the public face of the game, famously communicating directly with the community through developer update videos and setting the foundational lore, hero design philosophy, and competitive map pool structures that defined the first era of modern hero shooters. His sudden exit marked a massive turning point for Blizzard's flagship competitive ecosystem, which has since transitioned into a free-to-play model with frequent seasonal content updates, 5v5 competitive queues, and ongoing hero balance revamps. Despite the franchise evolving significantly under new leadership, Kaplan noted that he has completely disconnected from the community discourse, competitive metas, and patch notes surrounding the game he spent the majority of his career building.
