EA Shuts Down BioWare: Next Mass Effect Canceled [Confirmed]

Electronic Arts has officially shut down legendary development studio BioWare on October 21, 2026, laying off approximately 400 employees and permanently canceling the upcoming Mass Effect title after soft sales of Dragon Age: The Veilguard triggered a massive corporate restructuring. According to verified reports from Kotaku, the publisher confirmed the closure in an internal memo to staff, signaling the end of the storied Canadian developer behind franchises like Baldur's Gate and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The decision follows years of production turbulence, tracing back to the commercial collapse of Anthem in 2019 and prolonged reboots for subsequent single-player projects. Alongside shuttering BioWare, EA also scrapped Project Lotus, an unannounced project within The Sims franchise, opting to reallocate funding toward a companion initiative code-named Evergreen.
