IND vs NZ 2026: Ashwin Backs Shami Comeback [Confirmed]

Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin declared that the international door is not closed on veteran fast bowler Mohammed Shami, clarifying selection parameters after the senior seamer was unexpectedly excluded from India's official two-match away Test squad against New Zealand in early 2026. According to verified reports from Sportskeeda Esports & BGMI, Ashwin emphasized that Shami's proven pedigree and lethal reverse-swing capabilities ensure selectors will revisit his profile once workload and rehabilitation milestones are achieved. The exclusion had triggered widespread debate among analysts, especially following our earlier coverage on [IND vs NZ 2026 Tests: R Ashwin Questions Squad Omission [Confirmed]](/news/ashwin-questions-ind-nz-squad-exclusion), where team management prioritized fresh fast-bowling arms for oceanic seam conditions. Shami's absence creates an immediate leadership void in the seam battery, forcing interim spearheads to shoulder new-ball duties against New Zealand's top-order anchors. Ashwin insisted that elite cricketers frequently cycle through conditioning blocks rather than facing permanent international sunset, maintaining that Shami's match fitness in domestic red-ball fixtures will dictate his reintegration into the premier Test lineup ahead of major bilateral commitments later this year.
